Commission Unit: Final Documentary

Today we submitted our final cut of the documentary and here it is.

I really enjoyed this unit and it has made me want to film more documentaries. Having a subject like this was quite hard as I didn't know much about it in the beginning but from making this documentary I have learnt about apartheid and we have all worked hard to make sure the audience will understand it to. During the filming and research stages of our commission unit we all had certain jobs to do, but when it came to the editing stage it was quite hard for all 3 of us to edit at the same time but I did learnt a lot from doing my bit and observing Lauren and Jane when they were editing.

Commission Unit: Nearly There

We've filmed all of the reconstruction, re-recorded the commentary in a studio so that it doesn't sound echoy and we have also filmed another sequence which we have added in to set up the family. There are just a few changes to make now and then I think we will be ready to hand it in.

It flows really well now and engages the audience.

Narrative and Genre: Finished!

Today I handed in my final essay and I'm so glad it's over. I enjoy the research behind the essays but I find it hard putting all the ideas together. I handed everything in on time and I was really happy with my final essay.

Commission Unit: Editing

We have began editing the documentary now and we are all doing our bit to make it look as good as possible, for it to flow and to make sense. We are using lots of archive footage which we have found on Youtube to explain what life was like in South Africa and also show the different presidents coming into power. We are using commentary which we are recording on Garage Band to help set up the different characters and to help move the story along. We have been adding sequences of the family where we have needed to and we have just filmed a reconstruction which we will put in so that Ari's speech about his kidnapping is chopped down considerably as at the moment it is 6 minutes long and is therefore taking up most of our 10 minutes of commissioned time.

Film Reviews

Recently I have watched Fish Tank directed by Andrea Arnold and Monster the film based on Aileen Wuornos, a Daytona Beach prostitute who became a serial killer, which was directed by Patty Jenkins .

During a Narrative and Genre lecture we watched the documentary about Aileen and I was interested to see how she was portrayed in the film version. I thought Charlize Theron's portrayal of Aileen was amazing, she looked like her, sounded like her and she had even adopted all of her mannerisms. Watching the documentary and then the film was a bit strange as I already knew all the facts and so I didn't learn anything more about the story but I still think this film was a brilliant adaption of a true story and the way it was shot fit the genre perfectly as it made sense.

Recently we had Rashad Omar come in and give us a lecture on sound. He is a sound recordists and has worked on lots of great films and documentaries, one of the big films he worked on was Fish Tank and so after hearing his lecture I wanted to watch the film to see more of his work. A few of us got it out of the uni library and watched it. We all thought that the way it was shot, the sound and the acting was incredible but we were very disappointed in the lack of story line, we got to the end of the film and realised not much had actually happened.

Commission Unit: Update

For our documentary we will be filming a new South African couple as the initial couple were no longer available. The new couple are called Ari and Rita and they moved to the UK in 2008 because they moved to the UK so late in the noughties we have decided to interview and expert as well so that we can get some solid facts about what South Africa was like in the noughties and how people were effected by the reversal of apartheid.

Last night we filmed Ari and Rita's sit down interview and it all went really well, I worked on the sound whilst Lauren was behind the camera and Jane was asking the questions and keeping a time log. This Saturday Jane is filming Ari and Rita's eldest child doing fundraising as one of our sequences and then on Monday we will be filming the families evening routine as another sequence. We will also film them early Tuesday morning so we can get a sequence of their morning school routine and in the afternoon we will be going up to London to film Renee, our expert, at SOAS the university she lectures at.

We have all been set different jobs throughout the preparation and filming process and I think we are all starting to work well together as we are all now on the same page.

Narrative and Genre: First Draft

Today we handed in our first draft of the essay, I didn't manage to get the full word count but I wanted to hand in what I had so that I could get feedback and make sure I was going in the right direction. I still need to find some more quotes on online and portable media so that I can talk about how the narrative tools are effected by these transmissions. Once i have got some feedback I will flesh out my essay and make sure I include everything I need to.

Commision Unit: Interview Practice

Today and yesterday we had to practice shooting actuality interviews and sequences so that we knew what looked good when it comes to us shooting our actual documentaries. I was in a group with Lauren Woodfall, Zee, Alex and Lauren Howard we decided to interview Vanida, the head chef in the studio's canteen. We interviewed her while she was working so that it was an actuality interview. We asked her all about her job and filmed different sequences to show what she does at work. Lauren Woodfall was on the camera and she managed to get some really good shots and they all flowed really nicely when we came to edit them together.

Here is the final film.

Direction Unit: My Final Piece

Direction Unit: Deadline Day

Today is deadline day and I am quite calm for a change as I have managed my time well with this project and have not had to do much work to my piece today apart from making sure the credits matched everyone elses. I'm pleased with how my film has come out I've worked really hard on it to make sure it looks professional and interesting. I've used everything I have learnt from previous projects to help me make a piece which I am really happy with. But from doing this project I have also learnt a few things which will help me on future projects and they are:

  • To always make sure you have enough coverage
  • Make sure the sound is being recorded properly by using a boom mic if the actors are far away
  • Make sure you watch your actors carefully to make sure their movements are something you want their characters to be doing
I also learnt from this project that I do enjoy being the director but it can be quite stressful keeping an eye on everything and there is alot of preparation involved and if you don't do that then you will be very unprepared.

I've finished everything now and I'm ready to upload.

Direction Unit: Editing

I've began to edit my clips so that the scene flows better and will be interesting for the viewer. I've realised that my video is not going to reach 3 minutes I think this is because I cut so much out of my script. I will do the best with the footage I have and make sure next time that my script is the correct length to make the scene the length I want it to be.

Narrative and Genre: Essay Help

This morning Maddie, Dean and I all went to see Rachel Kitchen to get some help with our essays as we were unsure on how to structure them and what exactly we needed to include. She helped us alot with figuring out a structure:
  1. Introduction
  2. Context - What is narrative tools and genre
  3. Example - X Factor, choose a specific episode or character
  4. How online transmission could effect the narrative tools and genre
  5. Conclusion
She also said to make sure you use a variety of sources and to try and in bed the quotations in your sentences as well as putting them in to show what someone has said.

We also went and saw Nick in the library who taught us about the online resources the uni has to help us with our essays.

Both Nick and Rachel were a great help and I now have a greater understanding of the question, how to structure my essay and where is best to find my research.

Direction Unit: Beginning My Editing

Today I started editing my shots together using Final Cut Pro. I first sorted all of my shots into separate bins so that they were organised and I could find the shot I was looking for more easily. I then began putting the clips I wanted on the time line as a rough idea of what I wanted and I will go back through and edit them together more thoroughly so that they flow much better together. I also made sure I left a gap at the beginning so that when I have finished editing completely I can insert the "Directors 13" titles as well as my own.

Direction Unit: My Shoot

Today it was my turn to film and I feel it went really well. I was pleased with my actors performances and my crew worked really hard to help me achieve the look I wanted and get all the shots I needed to create my scenes.
A big thank you to everyone who helped me today I really appreciate it.

Direction Unit: Shot List and Script Feedback

I showed Simon my edited script and shot list today and he gave me some very helpful feedback. He looked through my script and found a few things which I could cut out to make it even shorter as they were not necessary bits of dialog. He also looked at my shot list and showed me how I could simplify it so that it makes my life easier and also allows me to get the best performance out of my actors.

I will take his advice onboard and edit my script again and change my shot list so that I am fully prepared for shooting on Sunday.

Narrative and Genre: X Factor seen as Fictional

When we did our Story of Narrative lecture we talked about X Factor in a fictional way which helped me to understand what narrative plot line the show follows.

Here are the notes on X Factor:

To understand the nature of narrative and plot, lets look at a classic old example and see if you can name the story:

It’s story is about a quest to find a mythical person that will bring hope and riches to all those involved.

It has a cast of thousands but only five main characters: The protaganist (young, bright but is an ugly duckling waiting to turn into a swan)  The main character (Young, beautiful, fragile, but with a fierce determination to succeed).

The Antagonist (Likes to pretend they are good, but is actually bad, willing to sacrifice anyone who gets in their way)

The secondary character (Dependable, supports everyone and everything.)

The side-kick (merely there for comic relief and to undermine or support the various characters)

The setting: contemporary, covering a whole kingdom but with a main single castle.

Genre: Fairytale with elements of drama, suspense and fantasy.

Tone: Colourfull and lush, with broad epic camera moves and lighting.

  The classic story known as....?

Though presented as a reality talent show, the X-Factor has all the ingredients of a classic fairytale, using the plot device of “The Quest”

  The Characters: Protagonist (The Contestants).
  The Main character (Cheryl Cole)
  The Antagonist (Simon Cowell)
  The secondary character (Dannii Minogue)
  The sidekick/comic relief (Louis Walsh)

Direction Unit: Initial Script Feedback

I handed my script into Simon and I agreed with his feedback that the script was too long and would not fit into the 3 minute frame which we have been set in our brief. I will try and cut it down to 3 pages by getting rid of unnecessary dialog and maybe one of the characters. By getting rid of one of the characters it will make my script shorter but it will also make it easier for me when I come to shoot the scene as I will only have to concentrate on directing 3 characters rather than 4. I will also make sure that I am as descriptive as possible when I re-write the script so that my actresses know exactly what is expected of them.

Narrative and Genre: X Factor Research

From reading through my notes and looking at X Factor I know the genre of the programme is Factual Entertainment and the narrative plot line they use is that of a Quest.

From doing research online I have found a pdf which I think will come in very useful with answering the question http://www.bfi.org.uk/education/conferences/mediastudies2010/x_factor.pdf. I have also found this radio broadcast which I think could be useful http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9280000/9280919.stm. I've also got a few books out of the libary which I will read through and pull some references from.

Narrative and Genre: My chosen programme

I have chosen to use X Factor as my programme for the essay as it has developed alot over the years and I feel there is alot I can talk about regarding narrative and genre. I also think that the narrative and genre tools which X Factor uses would defiantly be influenced by online media transmission because so many people choose to watch it online know instead of sitting down at the correct time to watch it on TV.

Commission Unit: Leaving Home

My idea didn't get commissioned but I have been put in a group with Jane and Lauren. Jane's idea was the one which was commissioned. It is called Leaving Home and focuses on a couple who had to leave their home in South Africa due to the reversal of apartheid. It will show their journey and how the move has changed them as people and how they have coped with starting their lives over again. We will use archived footage and one to one interviews to show the couples point of view remaining objective all of the time to insure their is no racial prejudice.

I haven't worked with Jane and Lauren before and this will be a great opportunity to see if we work well as a team and find out what each others strengths and weaknesses are.

This is our blog for the documentary so we can all share our research easily
http://leaving-home-uca.blogspot.com/

Commission Unit: Final Pitch

To day we had to pitch our ideas to Helen and Simon so that they could then choose which documentaries they thought should get commissioned.

Millennium Road Pitch

The documentary will focus on 4 generations all living on Victoria Hill Road, how they celebrated the entering of the 21st century, did any big events happen to them in the past 10 years, what were their goals and aims for the new century and were they achieved. Victoria Hill Road is named after the Victorians and has a joining road called Stuart Close which was named after the Stuarts who came before the Victorians and this is why Stuart Close leads into Victoria Hill.
The style of the documentary will be interview, archived footage and natural observation footage.

I will unravel all of the 4 individual’s stories in order to show how the noughties have changed them.
The 4 generations will be:
A child who was born in 2000 and is now 11 and starting secondary school. What big events have happened in their life?
Someone who is in their mid to late 20’s now and so was a teenager in the 10 years of the noughties. What kind of teenager they were? Do they think the stereotype of teenagers change? Has a teenager’s role in society changed over the 10 years?
Someone who is 40 now so back in the noughties they were 30 and had children? Were they scared about parenthood? How did they deal with it? Do they think parenting techniques changed over the 10 years? What are their ambitions/ plans for their children’s life? Is there more pressure these days to plan and save for your children’s future extremely early?
Someone who is 70 now and so was in their 60’s back in the noughties and retired. What have they done with their new found free time? How have they coped with the constant change in technology?

My opening and linking sequences will be travelling up the road and entering the different houses and I will use music from the era where necessary. At the end of my documentary all of the generations will get together showing that neighbours still exist and even though they are very different ages and lots of different things have happened to them in the last 10 years they can still all relate and respect each other and be friends.

The unique selling point of this programme is the fact that it focuses on people in the noughties and covers a range of different events instead of just focusing on one event which happened in the noughties.

This idea should be commissioned because it is unique and shows the noughties through the eyes of those who lived it.

Narrative and Genre: Choosing a Programme

Extreme Makeover tv show photoI've been trying to think of a programme to examine for my essay my initial idea was to do a cosmetic makeover programme like Extreme Makeover or The Swan as the characters in the show go on a voyage and return journey and I think there would be alot to talk about with the narrative and the genre of the show.

With The Swan it is a mixture of 2 genres Voyage and Return and Quest and so I would have alot to talk about with genre.

I have also thought about doing the X Factor as it has changed so much over the years and has become alot more about the narrative then the actual talent.

                                   TRUDY
Jess you don't die if you don't get

                                   JESSICA
Clearly I would have buried you
                         years ago.

                                   KATIE
                         No fighting

                                   SIOBHAN
Ok. Katie multiple choice sex, love
                         or kids?

                                   KATIE
What can I only have one? Ummm.
                         Love

                                   TRUDY
I think someone asked me out today

                                   KATIE
                         Really

                                   JESSICA
                         Oh yeah

                                   SIOBHAN
                         Hello

                                   TRUDY
He's a new dad at school and I
think he's just got divorced and we
got chatting at the supermarket and
he said that we should go for a
coffee and I went "errrmmm errrmm"

                                   JESSICA
Hang on a minute he asked you out
                         for a coffee in Sainsbury's?

                                   TRUDY
No. In Tesco actually and well I'm
not really sure he was asking me
                         out.

                                   SIOBHAN
What did he say? Exact words

                                   TRUDY
Do you fancy going for a coffee?

                                   SIOBHAN
                         He said fancy?

                                   TRUDY
                         I think so

                                   SIOBHAN
If he said that he was asking you
                         out

                                   TRUDY
Oh no maybe he said won't

                                   SIOBHAN
                         Well that's different. That's more
                         tricky to interpret.

                                   JESSICA

Stands up and takes an empty bottle of wine and puts it on
               the side.
You see this is exactly why I
                         switched from English to modern
                         languages

                                   TRUDY
Sorry do we want to talk about your
                         sex life some more?

                                   SIOBHAN
Come on women think. We've been
waiting 6 years for this. Want? Or
                         fancy?

Jessica picks up a letter, with a cheque for £2,000,000
attached to it,from the side and reads it. Then looks at
               Trudy.

                                   TRUDY
                         Fancy

                                   SIOBHAN
                         He was asking you out

                                   TRUDY
                         Really

                                   JESSICA

Walks back to the table and shows Trudy the letter she has
               found.
                         Trud. When did this come?

Siobhan takes the letter and reads it

                                   TRUDY
                         It came this morning

                                   SIOBHAN
So you've scored a million and
                         pulled on the same day

Siobhan passes the letter to Katie. She studies it for a
               while.

               INT. TRUDY'S HALL WAY

Trudy sees Jessica and Siobhan out of the door.

                                   JESSICA
                         See ya Trude

               INT. TRUDY'S KITCHEN

Katie is standing up still looking at the cheque. Trudy is
               clearing the table.

                                   KATIE
Why haven't you paid it in yet?

                                   TRUDY
                         Guilt. I know everything is
screaming at me to move on the
girls are both at school finally
                         settled for money and someone's
even asked me out after 6 years. I
mean someone I quite like. I mean
how can I move one? I still don't
know what happened to Paul. I mean
what if he is still out there.

                                   KATIE
                         No he's not out there

                                   TRUDY
                         There's phone calls

                                   KATIE
                         Police traced them

                                   TRUDY
But they were from public places

                                   KATIE
Thousands of people died in the
towers Trudy where else would he be

                                   TRUDY
Well maybe he lost his memory

                                   KATIE
Then he wouldn't be calling you
                         from pizza restaurants and cab
                         firms would he?

                                   TRUDY
You don't understand what it's like
not being able to say goodbye to
                         him properly ...

                                   KATIE
... It's been 6 years Trudy let it
go for christ sake. I'm sorry

                                   TRUDY
                         Katie. Is everything alright?

                                   KATIE
                         I've been having an affair

                                   TRUDY
                         What?

                                   KATIE
For 2 years he was married. He was
going to leave his wife but he got
ill and he died last week. John's
                         funeral was this morning.

                                   TRUDY
Oh my god. Why didn't you tell me?

                                   KATIE
                         I couldn't. I wanted to loads of
times and oh god I know it sounds
completely mad but I just couldn't

                                   TRUDY
                         Why not?

                                   KATIE
Because he was my patient and
because you would have told me to
                         stop
